23 Things We've Learnt in 23 Years — Alise Black Studios — Professional Photographer, Sydney

Twenty-three years ago, Alise Black Studios opened its doors in a small commercial studio in Prahran, Melbourne, with a singular purpose — to pair exceptional imagery with an unforgettable experience. Now as a trusted professional photographer based in Sydney, Alise Black has had the extraordinary privilege of photographing over 15,000 clients from all over Australia and beyond.

Today, on our 23rd birthday, we find ourselves in our premier studio at 240 Crown Street, Darlinghurst, Sydney, having travelled through many studios and cities — Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney. It's a milestone that calls for reflection. Because 23 years in this industry doesn't just teach you photography — it teaches you about people, about craft, about patience, about growth, and about what it truly means to make someone feel seen.

So today, we're sharing 23 things we've learnt over 23 years at Alise Black Studios. Some are technical. Some are human. All of them are true.

1. Quality over quantity — always.

It defines every decision we make, from the number of clients we take on to the time we invest in every single shoot. There are no shortcuts to exceptional work.

2. Precision photography takes time — and that time builds trust.

A rushed shoot is a wasted opportunity. When clients understand that we're taking care with every frame, every angle, every detail, they relax. And when they relax, the real magic begins.

3. A high-definition makeup base makes all the difference — and it's a necessity, not a luxury.

The right foundation conceals skin discolouration and creates a truly polished result that holds beautifully under studio lighting. It's one of the most impactful things we do before a shutter is pressed.

4. Natural editorial retouching is essential with today's cameras.

The latest cameras are extraordinary — and unforgiving. They see your skin at what feels like 300% magnification, capturing detail the human eye simply doesn't register in person. Skilled, natural retouching isn't about changing how someone looks — it's about showing them at their very best.

5. The fundamentals of professional photography never change.

Aperture. Exposure. Composition. These pillars remain as true today as they were when we started in 2003. What has changed beyond recognition is the technology — and staying across it, embracing it, and integrating it into our craft has been one of the great joys of this journey.

6. Learning to "see" light takes about ten years to truly master.

Controlling light at pace on a fast-moving shoot — reading it, shaping it, using it — is one of the most technical and creative skills in photography. It's also one of the most rewarding things to develop. There really is no substitute for time and experience.

7. Continuous learning keeps the craft alive.

From camera technology to post-production editing, this industry never stands still — and neither do we. The photographers and creatives who thrive are the ones who stay curious, stay humble, and keep evolving alongside the tools available to them.

8. The psychology behind photography is genuinely fascinating.

Here's something we love sharing with clients: we see ourselves in a mirrored reflection every single day — but a photograph is a true, unflipped record of how the world actually sees us. It's precisely why so many people feel that the camera "doesn't capture them properly." When we flip the image — suddenly, it clicks. It's not the photograph that was wrong. It's the perspective. This single insight changes the experience for so many clients.

9. Body language techniques are everything.

The difference between a stiff, self-conscious pose and a relaxed, natural image lies almost entirely in how we guide a client through the shoot. This is where our years of experience truly show — in the quiet direction, the gentle repositioning, the way we put people at ease without them even realising it.

10. How we see ourselves is shaped by years of inner dialogue.

Our beliefs about our own appearance — shaped by comments, comparisons, experiences across a lifetime — profoundly affect how we feel in front of a camera. Our job is to gently offer a new reflection. One that is kinder, more accurate, and more beautiful than the one clients often carry with them.

11. Every single person can be photographed beautifully — without exception.

Clients often walk through the door already telling us what they don't like about themselves. We hear this every day. And every day, we prove that list wrong. We genuinely believe — and have 23 years of evidence to support — that exceptional photography, great lighting, and a relaxed environment can reveal the best in absolutely anyone.

12. Great photographs are made of an abundance of small details.

Clothing. Styling. Hair. Makeup. Body positioning. Backdrops. Props. Lighting. Camera angles. Depth of field. Every element matters. But above all of that — above all the technical precision and creative planning — is emotion. Laughter, joy, confidence, warmth, a sense of calm. That is what transforms a photograph into something truly meaningful.

13. Kindness is non-negotiable.

You never know what journey a client has been on before they walk through your door. A difficult week. A long flight. Years of self-doubt about being photographed. This is exactly why we've always made our studio a warm, welcoming space where people can exhale and simply be themselves. The images that come from that place of ease are always the most powerful.

14. Creativity and quality don't compete — they elevate each other.

There's a misconception that rigorous quality control and free-flowing creative vision can't coexist. In our experience, the opposite is true. The most extraordinary shoots are the ones where both are fully present — where the creative vision is bold and the execution is meticulous.

15. Great photography is a collaboration, not a transaction.

It always has been. The best images come from a genuine partnership between photographer and client — a shared energy, a mutual trust, a willingness to explore. We are not here to simply press a button. We are here to create something with you.

16. Clients remember how they felt in the studio long after the images are delivered.

We've had clients return years — sometimes over a decade — later, and the first thing they say is how much they loved the experience. The images are the outcome. The experience is the memory. Both matter deeply to us.

17. Education is not finite — it's a lifelong journey.

The moment you believe you know everything is the moment you stop growing. Twenty-three years in, we are still learning, still developing, still finding new ways to bring our best to every client and every shoot.

18. Trust between our team and our clients is everything.

It creates not just great images, but mutual respect, genuine confidence, and an experience people want to return to — and recommend to the people they love. Trust is the foundation of everything we do.

19. In a world of rapidly emerging AI, there will never be a substitute for personal, tailored, human connection.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping many industries — and photography is no exception. But what happens in our studio — the conversation, the direction, the emotional attunement between photographer and subject — cannot be replicated by any algorithm. The human connection in our work will always be its greatest strength.

20. People want to look like themselves — polished, authentic, and with a little extra confidence.

Not a filtered version. Not an unrecognisable edit. Themselves — at their very best. Understanding this has always guided our retouching philosophy and the way we approach every single shoot.

21. Dreams really do come true — through dedication, hard work, and celebrating the wins.

Building a studio from the ground up — across multiple cities, through changing technology, economic uncertainty, and a global pandemic — is not a small thing. We've learnt to honour the journey, mark the milestones, and never take for granted what has been built with so much love and effort.

22. From a small commercial studio in Prahran, Melbourne, through many studios and cities — Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney — to our premier home in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

We are deeply grateful to have photographed thousands of extraordinary clients from all over Australia. Each one brought something unique to our studio. Each one trusted us with something precious. We do not take that lightly.

23. Twenty-three years in, and we wouldn't swap the ride for anything in the world. 🖤

Not the challenges. Not the pivots. Not the late nights or the steep learning curves. Every part of this journey has shaped who we are and how we work. And we are so deeply proud of where we stand today.
