What is the difference between actor headshots and an acting portfolio?
Actor headshots are the core casting images (usually tightly framed, natural and expressive). An acting portfolio can include headshots plus slightly broader “character” or lifestyle-leaning images that show range. If you’re approaching agents or self-submitting, most actors benefit from both.
Do you shoot theatrical and commercial headshots?
Yes. We’ll help you create a set that covers both sides of casting: theatrical (more grounded, dramatic, story-driven) and commercial (brighter, approachable, lifestyle-friendly). Your final mix depends on your type, goals, and where you’re submitting.
How many looks should I have for actor headshots?
As a guide:
-
2 looks: solid refresh if you already have usable shots
-
3–4 looks: ideal for most emerging actors (covers variety without feeling “over-shot”)
-
5–6 looks: best for actors who need clear contrast in type (or are updating for a new direction) We’ll recommend a number after a quick consult based on your casting goals.
What should I wear to my actor headshots session?
Bring a small range that supports different casting briefs:
-
Clean, fitted tops with simple necklines
-
Solid colours that complement your skin tone and eye colour
-
Minimal patterns or logos (they distract)
-
A jacket layer option for texture/authority If you’d like, we’ll guide you in a pre-booking styling consult so your looks feel intentional and casting-appropriate.
Should I include a character look in my actor headshots?
Often, yes—when it’s subtle and believable. Character doesn’t mean costume. It means a gentle shift in wardrobe, hair, posture, and expression that suggests a role without becoming gimmicky.
Do you provide direction and posing guidance?
Absolutely. Most people aren’t trained to “self-direct” on camera. We guide you through posture, micro-expressions, breathing, hands, and eye focus so your images look natural, confident, and castable.
Do you offer hair and makeup for actor headshots?
Yes. Professional hair and makeup can make a significant difference on camera—especially under studio lighting and high-resolution capture. We’ll keep it casting-appropriate (fresh, refined, not overdone) unless your brief requires something more stylised.
Should I arrive with makeup on?
For best results, arrive with no makeup (and avoid SPF on the day, as it can react under studio lighting). If you’re doing professional makeup with us, we want a clean canvas so it photographs beautifully.
Can I do actor headshots if I’m nervous or not experienced?
Yes. Many of our acting clients are doing their first professional shoot. We keep the experience calm, welcoming, and guided—so you never feel like you have to “perform” without support.
Do you photograph teen actors?
Yes. We work with emerging actors (including teens) and tailor the approach to feel age-appropriate, comfortable, and professional.
How long does an actor headshot session take?
It depends on how many looks you need. Some clients only need a short update; others build a fuller set with multiple looks. During your consult, we’ll recommend a session length that fits your goals.
When will I see my photos?
You’ll see your images during your viewing on the same day as your photoshoot so you can make informed choices about what best represents you.
Do you retouch actor headshots?
Yes - professional, natural editing is our signature style. Retouching should keep you looking like you on your best day: clean, refined, and natural. We avoid heavy edits that remove character or change your features.
What files do I receive and can I use them for casting platforms?
You’ll receive high-resolution digital images suitable for professional use, resized to multiple file sizes for easy use. If you need specific crops or file sizes for casting platforms, we can advise during your viewing.
Can you help me choose my final images?
Yes - Alise will curate the photoshoots/s to a strong collection of your best images. You will then have Treia help you select to your comfort. Choosing images is often the hardest part. We’ll help you select a balanced set that covers your casting range and feels cohesive.
Do you shoot only in Sydney?
Sydney is our premier studio base, and location photoshoots are also available in Melbourne and Brisbane. If you’re searching specifically for “Actor headshots Sydney,” we’ll tailor the experience to Sydney-based casting needs and your target market.
