...inspiration & determination...

Alise Black Photographic Studios began in 2003 in Melbourne. For 6 years now we have had permanent studios in both Melbourne and Sydney. We are very grateful for the clients in both cities who have stood by us during lockdowns. Lockdown can be a hard time, so I wanted to share with you something I find inspirational.

Below is one of my favourite all time images, created for an editorial 16 years ago. The canvas artwork hangs in my office in our Melbourne Studio. It gives us strength and steely determination to keep going. ..........................................................................................................................................

“A lot of people call me ‘old man’ because I’ve done more in my time than a lot of other blokes”. … Yes he has. This almost 24 your old often finds himself in the unusual position of influencing those in need of inspiration as well as the inspirational themselves (including being sought out by Nelson Mandela for his opinion on the state of Aboriginal affairs)... Just a few minutes in Russell's company brings hope.” Cath Pope 2005 Editorial

The small amount of time I was able to spend with Russell, a member of the Yorta Yorta community, inspired me to show his strength of character. This artwork depicts the Aboriginal flag and the importance of water to the Yorta Yorta people near Echuca. It reflects his dignity, respect and hope...and the gift of storytelling.

Photography is always a subjective art form. In my line of work, I always try to look for and help people create emotion in images - even the somewhat initially shy ones like Russell Weston, The Activist. ..........................................................................................................................................

Each person I meet has a story to tell. A life lived. One day I might write a book on the stories I’ve been told; they are at times shocking, very inspiring and hopeful .. Photography is not just about taking a snap - it’s about telling the story - your story. Capturing joy, kindness, a sense of calm. Taking the time to look for the emotion, passion and unveiling the personality.

I’m so grateful that I work with a small team of amazing people who are my ‘family'. I'm thankful for all the thousands of client’s I’ve met, the millions of images I’ve taken. Also, the wonderful feedback we receive from client’s about their experiences with us.

Getting through this COVID pandemic is going to be a marathon. It requires steely determination daily to keep routines and stay focused on the goal. Even the smallest goal makes the world of difference.

We are still taking bookings during the lockdowns, under the proviso that there may need to be adjustments to the times, given the last minute COVID updates. So, if you are wanting to do something nice for yourself, your portfolio, branding or business on the other side of the lockdown, contact us. We’d love to assist you!

Stay safe, well and we wish you the very best during this time. Our team is here to answer any questions you may have.

Take Care

Alise
